Richard Watson: Hello, welcome to this Jama software blog series, a user’s experience about Jama Connect vs DOORS. Why should you move, and why should you move now? My name’s Richard Watson, and I’ll be your host today. Throughout this vlog series, I’ll be joined by a number of experienced guys sharing their perspectives on Jama Connect and also the DOORS family. I myself have got more than 20 years of experience as a product manager of DOORS and DOORS Next. I joined the Jama team about 18 months ago.
Before we dig into the vlogs themselves, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the challenges faced by the organizations using DOORS today. Over the years, I’ve spoken to a bunch of experienced engineers who are now refusing to continue to fight DOORS. They’re starting to get an agreement on their requirements outside of the system, and then having those requirements entered into the tool by a tools user. So they’re using systems like email, Word, Excel, Zoom to come to that agreement. Oh, and don’t forget to export the requirements back out to DOORS to PDF, so that a proper review can take place.
Richard Watson: New users coming into vibrant organizations are taking one look at DOORS and are balking and then refusing to learn the system. If you turn the page and look at DOORS Next, it’s simply not met our expectations. It hasn’t matured fast enough to keep up with engineers’ demands. Total cost of ownership is becoming more and more important for organizations. Administration costs for the DOORS family are high. DOORS struggles to keep up with IT and security expectation and requirements, and the effort to deal with those is enormous. Being able to create the Excel solutions to fill in gaps is becoming harder and harder because the number of DXL guys in the market are simply diminishing.
Looking at Doors Next Generation, well, that’s just simply eye-watering in terms of the number of servers you have to step up to support even a single environment. So why should you move now? Well, many believe it’s inevitable that at some point, you are going to have to migrate. So you should do that on your own terms. Future proof your organization from external stimulus. Your IT department, your security team, or even the tool vendor giving you statements that you simply can’t afford. Increase your team’s productivity, and use a satisfaction with modern tools. By doing that, you reduce the risk of those team members working outside the system of record, and you’ll continue then to have an audit trail in your requirements, and establish the life traceability throughout your engineering process. Take back control from your tool vendor. It’s your data, it’s not theirs.
Richard Watson: Throughout this vlog series, what can you expect? Each vlog is going to offer you a layman’s view showing the difference between Jama Connect and the DOORS family. A layman’s view of the experienced guys that we saw earlier. We’re intending each vlog to be quite short. Just short, simple soundbites on different function areas in and around requirements management that we hope you’ll find interesting. Take a look at the vlogs, pick and choose which ones are of interest to you. It’s not intended that you would necessarily watch them all, but you’re welcome to do so.
